USA / Shared Code SMS Opt-in / Requirements and Restrictions

Follow

Q: What do I need to display on my promotions in USA to run on your shared codes?

A: You need to use txtNation's Dynamic Shortcode Loader

Introduction

The dynamic shortcode loader is an image file that you will need to load from our servers whenever you need to display opt in instructions for US services.

Due to the complex nature of the US market, carriers are constantly making changes to the opt in instruction, and terms and conditions requirements. What the shortcode loader does is allow us to make changes to all our client's displays any time we get a requirement for a regulatory update. This minimizes the risk of carriers suspending your service or denying outpayments due to non-compliance and also minimizes the chance of audit being in this non-search engine friendly format.

Here is an example of the shortcode loader image in its encoded form:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?vars=c2hvcnRjb2RlPTIzMzMzJnNob3J0Y29kZV9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmYmFja2dyb3VuZF9jb2xvcj0wLDAsMCZrZXl3b3Jkcz1HTytET1JJUzcma2V5d29yZF9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmdGV4dF9jb2xvcj0yMDUsMjA1LDI1NSZjb3N0PSQ0Ljk5JiM4ODM0Oz0wZXh0X2NvbG9yPTIwNSwyMDUsMjU1JmNvc3Q9JDQuOTkmIzg4MzQ7PTA=

How is this done?

See http://client.txtnation.com/client_scripts/launcher/launcher.html and try changing the variables and previewing the output. For an SMS based opt-in, change "Terms only" to 1, for WBORAR or PIN opt-in, see http://clients.txtnation.com/entries/203103-usa-shared-code-web-based-opt-in-pin-requirements-and-restrictions.

Use http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html to get the RGB code for the colors you want. Note that website informs you that the RGB variables contain "." (fullstops), you will need to change them to "," (commas). If you are using Google Chrome as your browser, you can also use https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/hmdcmlfkchdmnmnmheododdhjedfccka?hl=en

Looks good. We wish you the best of luck with the service.

Are you sure you don't want the promotions launcher to match your site? E.g. make the background white something like this:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?shortcode=96527&shortcode_color=46,0,184&background_color=255,255,255&keywords=DELETEMYNAME&keyword_color=46,0,184&text_color=0.0.0&cost=$9.99/month&sub=1

or maybe:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?shortcode=96527&shortcode_color=46,0,184&background_color=255,255,255&keywords=DELETEMYNAME&keyword_color=77,204,51&text_color=0.0.0&cost=$9.99/month&sub=1

You can use http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html to change the color variables yourself. Note you will need to change the "." (fullstops) to "," (commas).

Let us know if any better and we can encode it for you.

Please make sure that you do load the image on your site using the above method. DO NOT copy the image onto your server, as this will mean it is no longer dynamic and we won't be able to make changes to it.

Or if you prefer to make your promotions launcher using code:

Integration

Here is an example of the shortcode loader image in its encoded form:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?vars=c2hvcnRjb2RlPTIzMzMzJnNob3J0Y29kZV9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmYmFja2dyb3VuZF9jb2xvcj0wLDAsMCZrZXl3b3Jkcz1HTytET1JJUzcma2V5d29yZF9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmdGV4dF9jb2xvcj0yMDUsMjA1LDI1NSZjb3N0PSQ0Ljk5JiM4ODM0Oz0wZXh0X2NvbG9yPTIwNSwyMDUsMjU1JmNvc3Q9JDQuOTkmIzg4MzQ7PTA=

How is this done?

All the details in the image are set in the URL that calls the image. For example in its non-encoded form:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?shortcode=23333&shortcode_color=233,14,91&background_color=0,0,0&keywords=GO+DORIS7&keyword_color=233,14,91&text_color=205,205,255&cost=$4.99

Change these variables to match your campaign, as follows:

Variable name

Description

Example

shortcode

The shortcode itself

shortcode=22222

keywords

The keywords the user needs to send in

keywords=demo keywords

cost

The price of the content

cost=$1.99

shortcode_color (optional)

The color of the text used for the shortcode

shortcode_color=233,14,91

background_color (optional)

Background color

background_color=0,0,0

keyword_color (optional)

The color of the keyword text

keyword_color=233,14,91

text_color (optional)

The color of the other text in the image

text_color=205,205,255

sub (optional)

Whether or not the service is a subscription

sub=0

carriers (optional)

The carriers the service is active on, set this if not all of them are available

&carriers=Verizon, AT%26T+Mobility,+Sprint,+Nextel,+T-Mobile,+Alltel,+Virgin,+Boost+and+Cellular+One

Use http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html to get the RGB code for the colors you want. Note that website informs you that the RGB variables contain "." Let us know if any better and we can encode it for you.

Use http://www.w3schools.com/TAGS/ref_urlencode.asp if you want to include special character in the instructions, e.g. & or +.

You must URL encode the variables to reduce the risk of being audited.

Base 64 encode the request string. For those without the ability to develop code this means take everything after "http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode?" and encode it in one of the following ways:

1) In PHP you can do this using the base64_encode() function:

or

2) If you are not a coder, use the following site to encode it for you:

http://www.opinionatedgeek.com/dotnet/tools/Base64Encode/

Finally add the encoded string to the image URL in a variable called “vars”, e.g. if you are not a coder, add your encoded output at the end of this URL:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?

and you will have the final product ready to go on your site such as:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?vars=c2hvcnRjb2RlPTIzMzMzJnNob3J0Y29kZV9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmYmFja2dyb3VuZF9jb2xv

cj0wLDAsMCZrZXl3b3Jkcz1HTytET1JJUzcma2V5d29yZF9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmdGV4dF9j

b2xvcj0yMDUsMjA1LDI1NSZjb3N0PSQ0Ljk5

The produced URL will load the required image, and you can simply put it in the “src” field of an image tag in your html. Example:

<img src="http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?vars=c2hvcnRjb2RlPTIyMjIyJmtleXdvcmRzPURFTU8rS0VZUyZjb3N0PSUyNDIuOTk=" alt="Text in" />

Please make sure that you do load the image on your site using the above method. DO NOT copy the image onto your server, as this will mean it is no longer dynamic and we won't be able to make changes to it.

Here is a working example in summary:

This is a non-encoded version for you:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?vars=shortcode=40841&shortcode_color=233,14,91&background_color=0,0,0&keywords=H35+IPAD&keyword_color=233,14,91&text_color=205,205,255&cost=$0.99&sub=0

Base64 encode it:

c2hvcnRjb2RlPTQwODQxJnNob3J0Y29kZV9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmYmFja2dyb3VuZF9jb2xv
cj0wLDAsMCZrZXl3b3Jkcz1IMzUrSVBBRCZrZXl3b3JkX2NvbG9yPTIzMywxNCw5MSZ0ZXh0X2Nv
bG9yPTIwNSwyMDUsMjU1JmNvc3Q9JDAuOTkmc3ViPTA=

Add that to:

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?vars=

e.g.

http://us.txtnation.com/shortcode.php?vars=c2hvcnRjb2RlPTQwODQxJnNob3J0Y29kZV9jb2xvcj0yMzMsMTQsOTEmYmFja2dyb3VuZF9jb2xvvcj0wLDAsMCZrZXl3b3Jkcz1IMzUrSVBBRCZrZXl3b3JkX2NvbG9yPTIzMywxNCw5MSZ0ZXh0X2NvbG9yPTIwNSwyMDUsMjU1JmNvc3Q9JDAuOTkmc3ViPTA=

Put that into your browser and you should have a result.
